Most mothers, after the novelty of bonding through nursing has worn off, find something to distract themselves through some nursing sessions. Some leaf through a magazine, some watch some TV, some read a book and some seem completely focused on the baby while actually working on tomorrow's grocery list in their heads. Not to mention those mums who also have a toddler running around and can't just stop paying attention altogether to their older child 8-20 times a day.
If you have a hand free to do so, why not? I used to read books, watch TV, follow my toddler around the house, and even work on the computer while nursing my babies.
Certainly you CAN.
However, if your baby is awake, you should be looking at him (or her) and talking to him. This is part of how mothers and babies bond. Your baby needs eye contact and words, even as a newborn.
If your baby has his eyes closed and is just gently suckling for comfort as he drifts off to sleep, then it's okay to do something else, but when his eyes are open he needs you to be engaging with him.
If you want to I don't see why not. I found that the late night feeds were hard, especially because I was half asleep and wanted nothing more than to drift back off. Doing something to occupy your mind probably would help in those times.
Do what's best for you and your baby and don't worry about other people telling you it's wrong. As long as its sensible and not harming you or your baby and feels right for you then do it.
