Can you connect a Linksys router to a Xfinity modem?

So my mom recently got a new Xfinity modem, because after a power outage, our Linksys router was having issues. The Xfinity modem has built-in Wi-Fi, but it's really slow & it doesn't cover the whole house. The Linksys router was perfect & had a great Wi-Fi range throughout the house, but the Xfinity modem is on the other side of the house while the side I'm on (opposite side of modem location) has very weak or no Wi-Fi signal. I have a laptop & iPhone & the rooms on the opposite side of where the modem is has very weak or no signal at all. When the Linksys router worked, it had excellent signal & worked really well.

Is there a way to connect the Linksys router to the Xfinity modem to get better Wi-Fi?

If your Xfinity modem has Wi-Fi and more than one Ethernet port, then it probably a router and not a modem. Many home routers have a built in modem to connect to the ISP line.

If there's a spare LAN (Ethernet) port on the Xfinity box, you could run an Ethernet cable from that port to a LAN port on the Linksys. It may have to be a cross-over cable, but try a normal straight cable first.

On the Xfinity, check the range of addresses that it can use for its DHCP server. You need to find a free address on the sub-net that the Xfinity is using. Reduce the DHCP address range by one to create a free address if necessary.

Next, set the Linksys to use this free address as its own address. This will become the address that you can use to log in to the Linksys configuration pages.

Finally, disable the DHCP service in the Linksys. You can have only one DHCP service in a sub-net and it must the the service in the Xfinity.

You might find it easier to go for something like:

The smaller unit plugs into a power outlet by the Xfinity and connects to the Xfinity with a short Ethernet cable. The larger unit plugs into a power outlet in your room and provides you with both Ethernet and Wi-Fi right in your room. This saves running Ethernet cables round the house as it uses the power wiring instead.

  • MY Linksys WRT54G doesn't connect to the internet through wi-fi? The router is connected to an ADSL modem. I do have internet connection on my PC that is connected to the router via Ethernet cable, but when I connect to the same router through Wi-Fi on my iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phone it shows that they are connected but I can't access the internet. Their browsers try to open the webpages but they fail after 10-15 seconds. I did try to remove the security options from the router. It didn't help. It's set on DHCP.
