Can you unlock an iPhone 5 even though it's on contract?

I bought an iPhone 5 from a friend and I'm pretty sure it is not stolen but it's still in contract. I have a different carrier, would it alright if I unlocked it?

Your friend will have to unlock it with the carrier that had it under contract.
