Can you unlock an iPhone 5 even though it's on contract?

I bought an iPhone 5 from a friend and I'm pretty sure it is not stolen but it's still in contract. I have a different carrier, would it alright if I unlocked it?

Your friend will have to unlock it with the carrier that had it under contract.

You can try contacting the network provider to which the iPhone 5 is locked too… Some offer the unlocking. But many deny it during the contract period… In that case I suggest you can approach any legit third party unlock like http://www.unlocking4u.com/apple-iphone-5/rs16wp9/ and remove the network lock permanently where they offer unlock service for many GSM phones.

Yes, you can get it unlocked even if it's still under contract. Check online for factory unlocking iPhone 5.

  • Why can I still send texts to other iPhones even though my iPhone has NO sim card? My iPhone stopped recieving calls properly so I've had to put my sim card into a different phone. Why when my mate text me from his iPhone did I receive it still on my iPhone and not the phone with the sim card in. And I was able to text him back from the iPhone but when he called me the little Nokia that I'm using rang… I'll be honest, I really don't understand how iOs stuff works…
  • Why can I not use any sim card in my iPhone even though it is unlocked? I got an iPhone from a friend who says that the phone is unlocked, but every sim card I try in it seems not to work, it keeps on coming up with the same message that "There's no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate. Please disconnect and insert a SIM card in the iPhone." when have clearly put one in. What can I do?
  • When traveling, can I buy a SIM card to my iphone even though I'm still on a contract? I'm traveling soon. I have verizon and their roaming service is very expensive. I was wondering if once I get to my destination country, can I buy a SIM card so that I can be able to obtain phone service while on my trip? If not, My iphone is still under contract, if I get my phone unlocked, then buy a SIM card, would that also be a problem?
  • Is there a way I can switch to Verizon edge even though my 2-year contract isn't up? My poor iPhone 5c has a cracked screen and some of the letters are really hard to use with the screen! I never got Applecare or any type of I've had my iPhone for a 18months (1year & 5months) and I was wondering is it an option to upgrade early and participate with Verizon edge plan even though my two year contract isn't up? I've heard of something called the early edge and is that still available with Verizon or no? (Please NO RUDE COMMENTS!)
