Added (1). I'm using an iPhone 3GS. My battery was at around 45%, but the phone crashed (went to black screen with Apple logo). Then after about 5 minutes it rebooted itself. This happened 3 times.
Could it be the cheap aftermarket charging cable it was plugged into at the time, even though I had plenty of battery power left?

Nope, impossible for a charger to crash a phone. Because it's just inductors, diodes, voltage regulators smart charge IC etc… Unless it's intentionally sabotaged(highly unlikely). Anyways please use original charger because it is specially designed for your phone's battery to prolong it's lifespan. Especially iphone where the battery is not removable. So replacing one will be extremely expensive.

Than there seems to be some sort of finely woven metal mesh. Under that of course, are the wires that care power to the phone. But I plugged my iPhone into my friends charger which I realized after was not an apple charger, it was only plugged in for 5-10 minutes before I removed it- could it possibly have already done some damage to my phone? I can't tell if my phone is charging slower or if I'm worrying myself over nothing!
