Does an At&t iphone 5s work with a T-mobile nano sim card?
I heard some iphones come unlocked now. Will an iphone 5s from at&t work right away if I insert a nano sim card from T-mobile?

In your case, no. That AT&T iPhone is locked of course to AT&T. Any iPhone sold through a carrier is locked to that carrier. Apple themselves at their stores sell unlocked ones.
So, again, no, it would not work. That iPhone would have to be unlocked for it to work with a T-Mobile SIM.

Only if it indeed an unlocked iPhone… The trouble with "heard things" they are most often wrong.
Verizon iPhones from 5+ come factory unlocked. AT&T iPhones do not.
