Does using Wi-Fi on my iphone overseas charge for roaming?

I live in the US And I'm on a trip in China. I've been using wi-fi on my iphone 4s. In my network settings I have roaming and cellular data both turned off. I also have airplane mode on just to be safe. But I heard that I may be charged for using the wi-fi in China. Is this possible? I have the latest software if that makes any difference. And I've been texting through iMessage, but only through the wi-fi, not using any SMS. Would browsing the Internet, playing Words with Friends, etc.via Wi-Fi charge roaming fees? Thanks. I'll be checking this question often so feel free to ask for additional details.

Yes. You will pay hefty fees.

Phone companies look for a way to charge you more and get extra cash in any way that they can. While I don't know this for a fact, I'm pretty sure that you will be paying out your *** for sneezing the wrong way while holding your phone, much less using Wi-Fi overseas.

No, Wi-Fi has no relation to your mobile phone company, and there's no way they could charge you. I use WhatsApp (similar to iMessage) and other internet services over Wi-Fi here in Honduras to avoid paying for a data plan.

You're smart to keep cellular data turned off. Just curious: what cell company do you have, and how much do they charge for roaming in China?

Nope.

  • What exactly does turning off Data Roaming do? Living in SK, Canada IPhone 4 under Sasktel. Okay so when I go to work located near the boarder occasionally I get a your now US roaming chargers messages. Does turning off data roaming remove all roaming charges like phone calls, messages, etc or just email and Internet like it says? I'd hate to be billed just because I'm too close. Just been turning off all network connections at work so far and data roaming is usually off anyway.
  • Using my O2 free mobile data in Spain - do I turn data roaming on or will this charge? It's now free to text and call and use mobile data in Europe and I'm on contract with O2 and have unlimited everything. I'm just wondering if on my iPhone I have to turn data roaming on to get this or will this charge me? How does it work? As when I turn on my mobile data without data roaming the 3G doesn't work until I actually turn on data roaming?
