How to delete contacts from iphone?

My brother's phone had been stolen so he bought another phone. We were editing the number on my mom's iphone after putting his new number. The old number keeps on appearing in the write messages even if it is deleted. How can we erase/delete that?

Added (1). Even if i go to contacts and delete it. It still appears on the messages, when we type a contact.old number keeps appearing even if it's deleted.

Go to the contact and select edit in the top right corner. Then scroll to the bottom. There should be "Delete Contact" in red.

Step 1
Tap the green "Phone" icon on the bottom of the iPhone home screen.

Step 2
Tap the "Contacts" icon. This icon is a head and shoulder silhouette.

Step 3
Select the contact you want to delete from the list.

Step 4
Tap "Edit."

Step 5
Scroll down the list of editing options and select "Delete" to remove the contact.

The chat thing says they haven't been seen since 28th sept? If they didn't have my number on their phone would they still show as one of my contacts on whatsapp?
