The app is part of the operating system on the phone. You go into settings, and iCloud, and turn it on. Then you go to the iCloud website, or if you have an iPhone or iPad, you can click on the "find iPhone" app. If it isn't turned on on the phone, you can't do it remotely. It's also handy because you can make the phone make a noise even it it's on vibrate only. My kids have called me from college and asked for me to ping their phones when they lose them.
Unless you previously arranged and set up your son's phone to be found from your phone, it can't be done after the fact.
Sign into his Apple ID (or yours assuming you share one) into the app.
