Turn off imessage like suggested above. Or you can use different apple id on your iPad. You can create a free iTunes account without credit card by downloading free app on iTunes on the computer by first making sure that you are not signed into any account in iTunes on pc

I receive text messages from people on my old iphone as well. I use it as my iPod because it could drain the life out of my new phone, so I don't necessarily want to reset the entire phone. I have cellular data off and I'm with Verizon.
