How to use emojis on iPhone 4?

I see everyone using emojis on twitter such as footballs and suns, and I downloaded the emoji app but had no idea how to use them.

Can anyone tell me where to find them and how to use them?

Why can't I see emojis on twitter on my iPhone? I can see them in text messages, i can put them in my tweets, and I can see them in literally every other app, but when it comes to twitter all I can see are question marks. Even when I look up my own tweets with emojis in them, they won't show up. I have an iPhone 4 running the latest iOS. What the heck is going on?
Why can't I receive emojis from an AT&T iPhone on my Virgin Mobile iPhone? My girlfriend can't send me emojis through messaging but can on kik, kakao and things like that. We both have iPhones, so I don't see why she can't. Hers is jail broken, but she can send emojis to other people, just not me.
