You can make in-app purchases with the 5s, you just can't make NFC purchases.

Yes, I know the 5s doesn't have NFC. But NFC is only used for in-store purchases. My question was not about in-store purchases. My question was about in-app purchases. So, for those of you saying "it's because of NFC" - obviously you didn't read my question.

The iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 don't have NFC, so they can't make in-store purchases. But they can make in-app purchases. My question was why can't the iPhone 5s make in-app purchases as well.

Well, I found that there's a chip called a SE chip (Secure Element) which stores and encrypts your credit card data. The new iPads have this, and the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have this SE chip, but the 5s doesn't have it.

So the answer is the SE chip, not the NFC chip.
