Will an iPad have the same signal strength as an iPhone?

I'm looking to buy a new iPad for my younger sister. Currently she watches youtube videos on my iPhone 5. Everyone in my family has an iPhone new and old gens. All of them suffer from bad Wi-Fi when we go up stairs (router is downstairs.) BUT any other internet device such as a Laptop or my Nexus have perfect connection from a distance. The iPhones in our house can only go so far before the videos constantly buffer.

My question is will an iPad suffer the same problem as my iPhones OR does the iPad have stronger Wi-Fi like a normal laptop/macbook/tablet… Or does the iPad have the same Wi-Fi specs as the iPhone.

I think iPad signal strength will be weak, as specs are compromised in a tablet.

Wi-Fi standard allows a device to connect to the access point using either 2.4GHz or 5 GHz radio frequencies - assuming the access point can handle both.

Before this dual band capability, 2.4 GHz was the only frequency Wi-Fi would deal with. 2.4 GHz is better for "coverage" - so if the user is normally upstairs at your house, then the device should use 2.4 GHz. If the user is regularly downstairs using the device, then it may be better for that device to be on 5 GHz.

There are potentially a couple of things going on that would dictate speed - over and above the "coverage bars". If all devices are using the same frequency, there could be Wi-Fi contention - especially if all are using some sort of streaming service.

Another option is to get a Wi-Fi network extender. One example:

In your situation, plug it into a relatively central location's AC power upstairs and mate it to your existing Wi-Fi.

  • My iPhone suddenly has weak Wi-Fi signal strength? This has been going on for about a week now and it happened suddenly. My 3GS suddenly has terrible Wi-Fi signal strength, meaning that if I'm in my room now, I can't get Wi-Fi while sitting on my bed. I have to be on the same floor basically as my router. Is there something I can do? Is there dust blocking something? Tips please?
  • Is tbere any major différence between thé iPhone 6 and the 6s? Whooppeee is Xmas again and my daughter wants new 2nd hand) iPhone… 2 years ago almost bought her 5 before i réaliséd that it was 5s she wanted ( cos thé 5 sucks?) And I don't want to screw up this year…
  • Internet is running slow but strength is excellent? The internet on my iPhone & laptop are both running slow. It says excellent connection but when I try to watch a video on youtube or load a webpage it takes forever to load even though i'm in the same room as the router. I called my isp and the solution worked for like an hour. I tried unplugging router. It's not because of multiple devices being on at the same time. Any idea on how to fix this?
  • Does iPhone Signal Strength Deteriorate Over Time? My iPhone 4 recently crossed over the 1.5 year mark, and I've noticed that signal strength has a suddenly deteriorated recently. I'm making calls at the exact same locations as before but they are in-and-out or dropped with increasing frequency while data connection is also worse. Do all phones deteriorate like this close to the 2 year upgrade cycle?
