Iphone 5 on verizon family plan.can I switch it to a prepaid plan?

Well if you are asking if you can activate it with another carrier, than no, you can't. Almost anytime you buy an iPhone it will be locked to its carrier.
Since you have Verizon, which uses CDMA networks, it will ALWAYS be locked to Verizon, even if you unlock it. If it were an AT&T iPhone, you could unlock it and it would work with any GSM carrier, such as T-Mobile, Simple Mobile, Straight Talk, etc. (not Sprint, Verizon, MetroPCS, Virgin Mobile, etc)
If I were you, I would see if I could trade the iPhone for one locked to the carrier you want.
Oh, and I think you can flash your phone to MetroPCS, or at least you used to.
