IPhone 5s stuck in headphone mode?

This morning I was working with my iPhone in my shirt pocket listening to music. I did NOT have headphones in. After about 1/2 hour, the sound just cut out.

When I adjust the volume, it shows "headphones" even though I have no headphones plugged in. If I put headphones in, I can hear everything.

I've done some online research and found people suggesting to plug and unplug the ear buds to reset it. Others suggested using a toothpick to remove any lint that may be blocking it inside. I have tried both, and neither worked.

I've tried rebooting. I've tried rebooting with the earbuds plugged in, then removing them. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing works.

I set a timer, and when the timer hit 0, the speakers came on and played the music for the timer, but that's it. No other sounds come out of the speakers. While the sound from the timer was playing, I could plug in the ear buds and hear the sound from both the speakers and the ear buds.

So basically I KNOW that the speakers are not "blown out" or anything. The phone simply thinks the headphones are in when they are not.

What can I do to fix this?

Try rebooting with the phones OUT
A number of apps 'stick' in headphone mode till they are stopped and started again (eg TuneIn app), silly but anyway.

if you reboot with the headphones in, it will stay in that mode.
else, go see an apple store/ guru and have them fix it!

Well… Sticking a needle inside and poking around seemed to have gotten the need "stuck" on something and after I pulled it out, my phone is back to normal! I feel silly for asking and then figuring it out just a few mins later, but honestly I had already tried poking around with a pin (not a needle) and had no luck.

Hopefully this helps someone else!

  • Somehow, a huge piece of the headphone jack got stuck in the headphone port, and I can't find any I think the headphone type is just a normal iPhone headphone. So ground, audio, mic and some of the plastic, or whatever it is, around it, got stuck in there, and it's not super deep, probably because it's almost the whole headphone jack, but it's still in there. Someone please help! I can't find anything! It's just the headphone jack tip that got stuck for everyone else! It's a laptop.
  • My iPhone 4s is stuck on headphone mode? I did a restart a couple of times. It doesn't work. So now when someone calls me or when I all them I have to put it on speaker. And it doesn't make sounds. It doesn't ring. At all.
  • My iPhone 4S is stuck in headphone mode, what do I do? I can't hear any sound, no sound on any apps and no sound in my music library. The volume bar has disappeared and only with head phones can I hear sound. What do I do?
  • Is my Iphone stuck in headphone mode or is it a broken earpiece? Just yesterday I got a pre-owned Iphone 4S. I was making a test call to make sure that I was connected to the service. I notice immediately that I could only hear the other end when either headphones were in or it was on speakerphone. When I'm not making calls I can hear the clicks of typing and turning the device on and off just fine. I was just wondering if my Iphone is stuck in headphone mode or not and if there's a way I can fix it.
