IPhone only charges when it's off?

I have an iPhone 5 and I've tried charging it with multiple chargers but it only charges when it's off. However, if I use a car charger it charges when it's on. I've read I have to restore my phone, but I don't want to because I don't want to lose everything. Is there another way to get it to charge when it's on?

Try holding the power off button and home button until the apple logo appears (YOU WON't LOOSE ANYTHING!) if that doesn't work its maybe water damaged somehow…
