Is data used when Imessaging with the iphone?

I only get a certain amount of RAM a month, does Imessaging use data? I turned off my data since i'm on Wi-Fi, but then the imessages do not sent? Do they use alot of data?
Just got my iphone yesterday, so i'm slowly learning haha.

Yes it does use data

If you are talking about regular text messaging on your phone, that does not use data nor Wi-Fi, but it is a provider option, so you may need to pay more for text messaging.
Regular text messages use cellular network, not data.

If you are talking about e-mail messages or I'm messages using some app, that will use data, and Wi-Fi if connected properly should work for these.

Another option for text messging is google voice, you can install the google voice app, get your own google phone number (separate from your sell phone number)

and use Wi-Fi to send and receive text messages for free to any number in US or Canada.
