Is it ok to use Wi-Fi in a plane with Airplane Mode?

I have a question i'm going on a plane soon and i have a iPhone and i wanna use Wi-Fi on the plane the aircraft model is a Boeing 747 and i have heard bad stories that mobile phones can interfere with the planes system and cause it to crash!

Putting the iphone in airplane mode does switch off the Wi-Fi, but you can turn it on manually. My perspective is that if the airlines installed the Wi-Fi on their planes, then they probably did the testing and such to ensure its safety.

Not all airlines offer Wi-Fi for free though. You still have to turn off the phone during take off and landing, so the trick is to set it to airplane mode before you turn off the phone. Then when you turn it back on after the crew says ok, your iphone will start up and be in airplane mode already.

Depends on the airline, but many do allow it. However, it must be set to airplane mode before takeoff and
powered off during takeoff & landing.

Putting in airplane mode switches off the Wi-Fi.

If Wi-Fi is available on your flight (very very unlikely on such an old aircraft) then it is ok to use.

Airplane mode turns off the signal to your phone, which is what could potentially interfere with signals to the aircraft. It also turns off the Wi-Fi, but you should be able to manually turn that on.

If a plane offers Wi-Fi, then you should assume that it's safe to use.

It can interfere but if it says there's Wi-Fi than it should be ok to use it

No no it will not cause it to crash or anything it is just a possibility that they may interfere with certain electronic gadgets among takeoff. Its fine use Wi-Fi

  • Will I still be paying roaming charges if my iPhone is on airplane mode? I live in canada an my brother got a huge bill for roaming charges when he went to new York without even calling or texting. I'll be going to new York tomorrow and I would like to know if my phone will be roaming on airplane mode

  • IPhone Problem: Airplane mode and text messaging? I switch my iPhone to airplane mode at night (so people can't wake me with late night calls etc) and when I go into places where there's no cell coverage (to save battery but still let me use camera and music). BUT When I switch it back off airplane mode it takes a Really LONG TIME to reconnect to sms service. Phone calls and internet work fine straight away, but texts take a really long time to sort themselves out. Very frustrating, does anyone else have this problem?
