My old iPhone is still receiving my texts?

Today I switched from an iPhone 5 to a 5s and my iPhone 5 is still getting my text messages. And my new phone says "waiting for activation" under iMessage. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Your old phone is still receiving iMessages. That's because you haven't removed it from your Apple account.

The new one is either a lost or stolen phone, or has been incorrectly reset by the last legitimate owner using Find My iPhone. So it's now expecting the last owner to enter their iCloud password and Apple username. If the last owner is unavailable to re-activate the phone then it's absolutely useless. An Apple Store can bypass it, but only if you can provide full ID and absolute proof that you're the legal owner. A fee is charged as well.

If the last owner re-activates it, then the correct way to reset the phone is for that person to go into Settings>General>Reset>Erase all data and settings. The last owner must enter his or her PIN to do that.

Once it's been wiped and reset the phone can be set up afresh on your Apple iCloud account.

  • Why am I not receiving the notifications from texts on my iPhone? I have an iPhone 5 and whenever my girlfriend texts me, I don't feel a vibrate, hear a ring, and when I look at my lock screen, there's nothing there, but when I open it and go to our messages, there's like five messages that I haven't gotten notified for. Is this a bug or glitch with the iPhone 5 or is there a fix for this?
  • Why am I not receiving texts on my iPhone? I know people send me texts but my phone doesn't receive it. I called someone and then all my texts popped up at once. It seems like I can only receive my text if I make an outgoing call. I'm with Virgin Mobile by the way.

  • My iPhone suddenly isn't receiving texts? I just went on a trip to Europe. When I was there I was able to receive texts and send them just fine. Suddenly on my way home (in the airport) I was texting my friend and it said my text failed. I'm home now (where I always have good signal) and I can't receive or send any texts. What should I do? I tried turning it on and off, a hard reset and putting it on airplane mode then back to regular. I have an iPhone 3GS if that makes any difference.
