Pictures: how do you get a dark background in selfies?

I seen some people take selfies like this and the background is really dark. How do you do that? Is there an iPhone app? Please help.Pictures: how do you get a dark background in selfies - 1

It is a photographic technique where the background is black, the person is placed at least four feet from it and the light that is falling on the person is placed so that it does not fall on the background

Most of the time they're in a room with not much light and then they use their flash.

This is shotted against the light.
You can have a try. It's easy.

You shoot with the camera settings such that you kill the ambient light and you have the flash close to the subject and the background much further away. That gives you rapid light falloff. The light is usually controlled from spilling everywhere.
That shot you posted was not taken with on camera flash. The shadow is too soft and the catch lights in the eye are quite large. I would say that was taken in a studio with off camera flash in a softbox.
Usually, indoors shooting at the max sync speed for flash and having the aperture around f8 or so will turn the room black.

  • Why isn't my Iphone (5) taking regular pictures and only able to take Selfies? When I take a picture of the object in front, the screen goes blank and the picture doesn't get taken. It then slides to the start page. When I start the camera it goes on flip mode automatically and only takes selfies. any idea what's the problem here?
  • Why do I look horrible on selfies? When I take selfies with a friend or just by myself I look really bad but in reality I'm not that ugly. Its like the iPhone makes my face look worse and shows all my defects lol why? And when I take it with a professional camera I look good.
  • What do people use to take selfies of themselves taking selfies? I have to help someone take a good selfie for her profile but I can't exactly explain it. As far as I know, the front view lens only captures you and your background and the rear facing lens on the back of the phone takes a picture of what is in front of you, such as a landscape. That said, using an iPhone 4, how is it possible for someone to take a selfie that looks like there's someone taking a picture of them while they're doing it.
  • IPhone XS max takes very dark picture in dark rooms even with flash? My wife just got me the new iPhone XS for my birthday and I wanted to take a picture with the flash in a nearly pitch black room but realized that all the pictures came back very dark even when I used flash. Is there a way to take regular photos with the flash actually staying on when it takes the photo like any other phone?
