Procedure for switching to a new carrier and number transfer?

I'm planning to switch my cell phone plan from Rogers to WIND. I'm just asking what the procedure is to do so.

My Rogers plan is not under contract and the phone I use is iPhone 4S. I'm not sure what to do first. Do I go get the WIND plan first from the store an then call Rogers to terminate? Or should I call Rogers to terminate the plan before I go and get a new plan from WIND? How would I be able to transfer the number to a new carrier and continue using the same number? FYI: I live in the GTA.

I'm switching to the $35/M WIND plan with unlimited calling/text/data. I pay over $60+ to Rogers for the same plan but with like 2GB of data.

Here are the steps to port (transfer) your phone number
1) Make sure you still have service with Rogers. The line should be active and still have service. Do not call them and tell them you are transfering your phone number to Rogers.

2) Contact or call Wind cell phone company and tell you like to activate services with them. Tell them you would like to port (transfer) your phone number from Rogers to theirs. Wind will handle the transfer and arrangements. Wind will ask you for your phone number and account number and any password on your Rogers account

3) It takes about 8 or 9 hours to transfer your phone number from Rogers to your Wind cell phone that you have or just purchased. Once the transfer is complete, Wind will automatically cancel or closed your account from Rogers. Your phone number should now work with your Wind cell phone.
