What is the difference between Wi-Fi, LTE, and 4G?

I have an iPhone 5. I have a strong Wi-Fi signal in my house and my phone says its connected to my Wi-Fi in the settings but at the top of the screen it either says LTE or 4G. I don't have unlimited data, so I don't want to waste it. Is LTE using more, less, or no data? And how to i get my phone to use Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is basically what it uses to connect to a home or business' Wi-Fi router (hotspot) so you can connect to the internet using their broadband connection. When the icon says LTE, you are connecting on AT&T's 4G LTE network, which usually gets faster speeds, but you are going through AT&T's network. When it says 4G, it is actually connecting to the HSPA+ network, which is technically a 3G technology, but can get speeds similar to LTE (thus we usually call it Faux G because it is marketed as 4G but in reality is technically a 3G technology).

LTE technically uses roughly the same amount of data as anything else, but in theory it downloads faster, so most people tend to download more things because of the faster speed (human nature). To make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi, just check your settings in your iPhone and it should have a checkmark on the Wi-Fi SSID you are already connected to.
