Why can't I send a message from UK to USA?

I can't send a message from the UK to USA and I have put +1 in front of the USA number. I have an iphone and when I try to send it it just says error.

Does anyone know what I've done wrong?

Think it needs double zero's like 001 xxx-xxx-xxxx. See this. Best luck.
