Why do I look bad in pictures?

I look good when I'm on camera and haven't taken the photo yet but when I take the photo I look ugly in it like the photo has bad quality and it makes me feel insecure of myself. I use an iphone 4s to take the pictures by the way.

Added (1). How can I fix this

If you are shooting selfies, then the problem can lie in two places. 1) you are using a wide angle lens which distorts your face and 2) the lighting you are choosing is not conclusive to producing a pleasing shot of you. There's NO fix for the wide angle lens, but you can make sure that the light falling on your face is complimentary.

You will need to set up a key and a fill light to light your face. You will have to have a friend take a shot of you with the camera further away than at your arms length

The best possible shots of you would be if a photographer did the following.

* light you and your face with a key, fill and rim light
* use a medium telephoto lens
* direct you into complimentary poses.

A few things can make you look bad.
A selfie is the worst way to take your picture since the camera to subject distance is too close. This creates perspective distortion and makes facial features look weird. You need to have your camera-subject distance at least 5 feet away. The best thing to do is not take pictures of yourself holding the camera at arms length unless you want the typcial dog-face gag photo (these types of shots are fun for parties).

Another thing is lighting. Most people take pictures in horrible lighting which accentuates zits & wrinkles, and in some cases, makes them look fatter.

It's NOT so much that you look "bad" but moreso that you've had a lifetime of looking into a mirror, looking at a reverse image of yourself. Try this. Stand in front of a mirror and hold up a newspaper… And try to read it. You'll find the letters appear backwards. That's the image you've grown accustomed to seeing, a reversed image of yourself in mirrors.

If your taking a selfie, the photo usually flips around. The camera thinks this is a way to show you what you look like if you had taken a photo using the back camera instead of the front facing camera. But all its ever done for me is make me look bad too.

You're not used to what you look like in a picture

You need longer arms.

  • Why does the video quality look bad when uploaded to the computer? [iPhone 4]? When I upload my video to youtube in HD directly from the iphone, I go on the computer to watch it on youtube and the quality is perfectly normal. But when I copy the file from my iphone and onto my computer the video looks grainy? I wan't to put it into after effects and do some editing but how can I go about KEEPING the quality of the video? I don't get why it gets all grainy when I put it onto my computer vs. It being perfect when I upload it directly from my ipod to youtube?
  • Why does my skin look so bad under certain light. Any products to My skin will look fine when I look in my bedroom mirror, but when I look in my bathroom mirror or iphone front camera it looks absolutely horrific. Any reason why, and any product I can use for nicer skin?
  • Why does my skin look bad on my iphone camera? I don't have acne but I have a few blemishes (not many at all) yet my skin looks dull and blotchy on my camera! Even my friends say my skin doesn't look like that in real life.
  • Why do pictures taken of tv screens look so bad? Every once in a while I'll be playing a game on Xbox and it bugs out leaving a hilarious image on my screen, but every time I try to take a picture of my tv screen the quality is terrible. My friends can do the same thing with the same phone (iPhone) and I have a normal flat screen HDTV, but they're pictures look great, sometimes even amazing with a little patience of eliminating any jiggle when taking the picture. Why is this? Maybe my tv (LCD) needs to be updated to an led?
