Why do people have both a iPhone and a iPod touch?

You can just use the iPhone as a MP3 player, so you won't have to buy a iPod touch

I like my iPhone just for phone stuff and iTouch for just music. Also saves battery.

BECAUSE CAPITALISM.

Because they are too lazy to charge both and think technology is the most important thing in the world. Also they could be hipsters, also known as Whiney losers.

Lol, yes capitalism and consumerism. But I guess same as the other answer to save battery - if want to listen to music. For me a mobile phone is always about making and receiving calls - everything else are just fancy addons (maybe except camera & recorder as i find those generally handy).

It is a luxury and likely wasteful - especially in the case of people who already have an iPhone (or some other smartphone) and then get the new iPod Touch. However, besides the "save the battery" idea, it does make some sense. Many people get the cheapest iPhone - and it's the iPhone 4 that only holds 8GB and doesn't have siri. They skimp on the iPhone and then spend on the higher capacity iPod Touch. Also it's comforting to know that in case one of your devices goes bad, you've got a backup.

lastly many people got iPod touches a year or more ago, and then got iPhones.

I own both, but I had the iPod Touch before the iPhone, and my iPod Touch has more capacity. I'm considering selling the iPod Touch though because I got a Sansa Clip Zip with a 64GB microSD card and it plays everything my iPod can.

I don't really like having an iPhone either. I got it as a Christmas gift because my sister wanted one and if we bought a certain number, we got a special deal on the service plans. I honestly liked my Motorola V220 because I didn't have to worry about breaking it and all I needed it for was making calls and sending text messages, which it did just fine.

I just feel like my iPhone is too fragile.

That's what I've been wondering, since I've heard that they're mostly the same. I have an iPod Touch and will never get an iPhone, I don't need one.
