Why does the iphone 5 have a gray colored back?

The leaked images show that the back is a made of metal or something. But the top and bottom are left as plastic. Why did they change the back like that and why did they leave the top and bottom of it as plastic glass? How will this change help the consumer?

This is part of the iPhone 5's 2 tone design. It is simply there just to look good. Some will like it, and some like me, won't like it. One the positive side, the aluminum back might make the phone a little more durable than the current iPhone 4s.

As the iPhone 5 is loaded with components, you can expect a lot of heat to be generated from the circuit. The in-cell technology, which is supposedly being used in the new iPhone, is very sensitive to heat and this excess heat might affect its performance. To shield the screen against this heat, the iPhone 5 is provided with a metal barrier. However, it is questionable if a metal barrier is a good choice, considering it can still conduct heat. But experts are of the opinion that the metal shield will protect the screen from EMI interference from the underlying circuit also.

  • Will apple fix an iphone 4s with colored glass? I want to get colored glass back for my iPhone but only if apple will still fix any technical problems with my phone. Will they?
  • Will an iphone 4 sell more with a colored back? I have to change the back glass on my white iphone before I sell it. I was wondering if a white back, like the original, or a colored back would sell better?
  • Why is it that some of the music I buy on my iPhone turns gray and doesn't work after time? My family all uses this Mac downstairs and we buy music on my dad's apple account. I bought some instalok music and other random music, downloaded onto my iPhone with other music. It all works and stuff, but then a week later or something the text changes from black to grey color and it doesn't do anything when I tap it. How can I fix this?
  • Why doesn't the iPhone 5 have a colored back and strap? Okay the new iPod touch has a colored back that comes in black, white, pink, red, yellow, and baby blue. Along with straps that match the back. I'm not going to get the iPhone 5 but, I'm just curious because it seems as if they would get more consumers if it had a colored back like the touch. Could it be to market towards kids because not much kids got the iPod touch 4 or is it to much money to produce a phone that comes out in 8 colors? (I'm getting the new iPod touch)
