Why won't the screen on my laptop turn on?

Ok, I have a HP G62-341NR Notebook and the screen won't come on. All the lights( power button, cap lock, Wi-Fi) are on but not the screen. I know it's not broken because when I opened it the locked screen popped up and I tried to type my password in but it wouldn't show that I typed anything nor would the pointer move. So I closed the screen and like 10 minutes later tried to using it again, all lights not screen. Can anyone help I need my laptop for a lot of my school work plus my iPhone and I have a lot of homework on it so really really need a solution.

Thumb drives are miracles with this, you unplug it when your done after saving so when this happens, you just buy a new laptop. Try going to like bestbuy and seeing what they can do or your local computer store.

Is the screen working still when you first turn it on? I. E when Windows shows up.

If you connect a TV or monitor to the laptop, can you see anything on the TV / monitor? (You may need to enable this by pressing FN & F4 once connected)

Is the screen off or just very dark? If you shine a light on it can you see anything? If you can see the screen with a torch etc and it's just very dark then the backlight may have either developed a fault or be disabled.
