Why won't my iphone 5s detect Wi-Fi?

I just received a new iPhone 5s from amazon this weekend.
its my first day having it in school, and i get absolutely NO service. Its always searching. That didn't usually happen with my Galaxy SIII, same carrier.
when i was in the cafeteria, which always has an open Wi-Fi connection, i went to go search for it.
at first i figured the connection just wasn't strong enough, but then i took out my 5th gen iPod touch (since i hadnt put music on the phone yet) and was already connected to the internet. It even showed 2 other available connections, while my iPhone showed none.
what can i do to fix this problem?

Sounds like it's defective, call up Amazon and exchange it.

I would suggest a warranty replace.
