Take it to a pawn shop for an offer. Be prepared to be alarmed. Then you can try listing it on CL or ebay for $50-75 more than the pawn shops offer.

No it's not ridiculous to TRY to sell for $500. It's ridiculous to think someone will actually buy for that price.
One can get brand new iPhone 5S for $500, why would anyone spend $500 on used iPhone 4S? IPhone 4S new will cost around $250. So if your phone is quite mint, you can sell it for $150-200.
