That is All that glass or film screen protectors are suppose to do, protect the screen from getting scratches from being in your pocket, bag or placed on dirty/gritty surfaces. Are they made specifically to prevent breaking of the screen? NO, any jolt, bump or drop/hit, hard enough to break the thin glass covering the screen, is normally going to be hard enough to also break the glass that it is covering. Some drops may not break both, but there's no real way to tell which drop force will or won't break a screen.
