Are you in favor or against the new Kill switches on iPhones law in CA?

The Governor of California, Jerry Brown yesterday signed into law a requirement that all Smartphones must offer a "kill switch"to make them completely useless to thieves. This is the first law of its kind in the entire country. There exists a rampant theft problem in California with the target being expensive smartphones that can easily be stolen and sold in the streets by thieves. In San Francisco, CA for example the district attorney's office says more than half of all robberies in the entire year of 2013 included the theft of a smartphone.

I have no problem with the legislation other than that it's another example of Sacramento fiddling while Rome burns. Cell phone theft affects very few people when compared with how many are affected by the state's failing schools, unemployment, odious business regulation and failure to build water infrastructure.

Why would anyone NOT want this law… Apple and Androids have this technology already, but resist its implementation because every stolen phone is a soon replaced new phone… Force them to offer this feature.

This is no-brainer territory. Even a libby could understand this one without significant explanation… Even Smokin Joe

So what happens if you activate your kill switch, but later find out your phone wasn't actually stolen, but you misplaced it?

My understanding of the law is that the phone is bricked forever.

Absolutely.

Why not? You can prevent a thief from using your phone.

I'm against I-Phones

With iphones you pretty much have that today with find my iphone. If there are other types of kill switches, then I wouldn't be worried with an iphone because they have such good security, but if viruses could switch off your phone then I would be concerned with alot of other phones that have to run antivirus software. That would suck having your phone shut off with virus when you really need to use it.

Making this feature mandatory is stupid.

While I agree with the technology and I believe that Apple should put this function on their devices if they have it, I don't agree that they should be forced to do it under law.

Nope… Well maybe… Gonna take three weeks to get it shipped and sold over seas… Wait 3 weeks, then kill the phone… Put em out of business

  • What tool does law enforcement use to unlock iPhones? I heard that in iOS8, the data is encrypted so that law enforcement can't unlock iPhones, but my friend in high school got his phone taken away, and the school was able to unlock his phone even though he was on iOS 8. Also what tool do they use to do this, and how come it is still possible for law enforcement to unlock iPhone?
  • What is the game called? Bird, clouds, and switches from night to day? BAck in 2010 there was a game on the iPhone and iPod touches that had a bird that would bounce of the clouds to collect the stars, but you had to get as far as you could before night set in. It has been forever since I played it, and I have NO CLUE what the name of it is or what else happens in the game.
  • Is talking on your cell phone (not texting) while driving against the law? I have a head set with a speaker that covers only one ear. I can hear everything else with my other ear while using my cell phone (not Iphone). Is this legal?
