No. I've tried it and I own an iPhone 5c just buy a case specific for a 5c off eBay or something.

Not necessarily because the 5C is a fraction thicker, longer and wider than the 5, also the volume buttons of the 5 are round whereas those of the 5C are pill-shaped.

Usually they can if its rubber. But I think you should be careful of not letting the 5c slip out of the case or break by accident when dropped

Some can, but it's not because they're meant to fit, it's because some are made different but as said before… The cases are for two different shaped phones so probably about 90+% do not fit, if I were you I wouldn't risk buying the wrong case.
