Can i spray paint a plastic iPhone?

I have an old plastic iPhone 3g.
I don't use it as an actual cell phone beacause i don't have a data plan. I just use it for music and stuff…

But its whole life, its never had a case, so the rear plastic is pretty much shot…
It used to be black and glossy. But now its an ugly scratched matte gray/glossy black combo.

I want to spray paint it glossy white, but i don't know how to do it right. I tried spray painting my plastic flip phone before, but i didn't sand it or put a clear coat overtop, and it was awful and just peeled and flaked off.

How can i successfully spray paint my iPhone 3g to be glossy white but without having it end up peeling and flaking? How can i avoid getting paint into a small crack in the lower right corner of the plastic? Or the volume buttons?

My advice is: don't do it! Spray paint is a pain to use; believe me, it gets EVERYWHERE an smells disgusting. You'll risk ruining the electronics, getting some one the screen or camera lens, etc.

I suggest you wait until you have enough money to get (or can upgrade to) the iPhone 5c. It comes in nice solid colors, including white:

Or why not just get a case? OR HERE'S AN IDEA--get a "skin" for your phone! It's easier than paint, since you just stick it on!

If you really MUST paint it, try this. Place the iPhone face down on a newspaper-covered table. Cover the volume buttons with a rectangular piece of tape (you'll end up with a patch of black on your phone but it's the best I could think of). If the crack is not too big, you can smear some glue in it and let it dry. Then spray the whole phone. For a smooth finish, don't hold the can too close; if bubbles form, spray it more until they burst. That way, when the paint dries, the coat will look even.
