Can my job force me to miss a day of school last minute?

I work for a phone company part time while in college full time.

I go to work after school is over with 5-6 days a week.

They know school is my first priority and they knew that before they hired me and another employee.

The iPhone 6 comes out Friday and they told us they we're required to miss school no matter what although we usually come afterwards with no problem. They told us if we have a problem we should submit letters of resignation because the company is the main priority not school.

I know this is a big deal to the company but they are not trying to meet us half way at all. It's just me and another employee. They will have 23 other employees on the clock yet they are not willing to make an exception for 2 people.

Is the right? What should I do?

As this is college, not high school, it's legal. It may not be good for employee relations, but a business has the legal right to demand that you put their business over you schooling.

If they aren't willing to make an exception, then you can either resign or wait for them to fire you.

The right answer is… Screw them. Do you want to be a retail clerk, or are you going to school for something bigger and better? Let them do it once, and they will expect it from you again.

Entirely legal. Your employer has no legal obligation to work around your schedule. If you can;t work when they need you they absolutely can fire you.

You should update your resume. Welcome to life. Your being a student is not as important to the company as it is to you. They need you to do a job on a certain date, if you can't or won't do it then they don't need you any longer and will find someone that has different priorities than you.

If you have a contract for a specific period of time, and it covers hours, you can enforce that contract. Otherwise, no law prohibits you from accepting a job that might have variable hours that interfere with your school.

Expecting that your employer s first priority is "your school" is ridiculous. They have a business to run. It is you who needs to decide what your priority is and you decided that. It is school and that should be your focus. If the job does not mesh well with school, then your only option would be to quit and find a job that meshes better.
