I'm sure nobody would do that trade. But maybe if you put cash in you would be able to trade.
No. It's too old of a model. You can with a 4S but you have to pay I think for the upgrade
If your provider lets you trade in your phone you could probably get a bit of the price of an iPhone 5 knocked down but a 3GS is worth less than a 5 so it's not going to be free.
You can recycle old stuff here and apple will give you store credit for it:

Saves you the trouble of trying to sell it and even if damaged something is better then nothing.
They are not going to trade in such an old model, there are places that you can recycle it and they will give you a small amount of money for it, or you can sell it yourself. Either way its pretty much obsolete by now, so its market value is pretty low. You are going to have to pay for almost all of the 5 would be my guess.
