You don't have to own any mobile phone.
Because the software development tools have simulation built in them. So you can run them and see how they work in the programming software.
As long as android programming is concerned you can use any laptop you like. I would prefer i5 with 4gb. Though i3 with 4gb ram is sufficient.
BUT for ios programming you will have to buy a apple laptop or desktop. Else they don't allow u access to the programming tools. Don't go with any macbook airs for your ios programming.

You just need a good IDE(eclipse) and android sdk(version depends on the O. S. Version for which you are coding and it is freely available) for andriod apps development Also their are many good software avalable on net to test your project after completing the project you can send the generated.apk file to the phone on which you want to use it…
For programming needs you can buy
i3 processor
1gb graphic(only if you have planned for video editing, animation otherwise you inbuilt gpu will work fine)
ram 4 gb(with 64bit window)

And I'm learning java I know I could learn it on mac but I know my way around windows better. My question is what is better to learn to make Iphone apps or Android and why, witch makes the most money.
