Do wireless routers have monthly payments?

Let's say I move to a new house that has no wi-fi. Don't I just have to go buy a router, hook it up to the wall, and it gives off a personal Wi-Fi signal that I can use for a computer or iphone? Is it like that or does it have a monthly bill like cable does?

Added (1). To everyone who is asking if I already have internet access, I'm talking about the internet on my iPhone 4S. I need a Wi-Fi signal or else it runs off 4G which costs money

No monthly bill.
Just plug it into your current cable internet and WHAM, you have Wi-Fi.

No. Wireless routers don't just broadcast Wi-Fi. You need internet in your home. Which, obviously, has monthly payments.

Internet in a home is normally not wireless. So people buy wireless routers to get Wi-Fi. By themselves, routers do nothing. You can't just get free internet

You would need a cable modem first like from a provider like Comcast. Than you hook your wireless router to the cable modem which completes your wireless network. So, yes you would need to get service from a provider which creates a monthly bill.

First of all, you need to have an arrangement with an internet service provider (ISP) to provide the internet to your house. The ISP will provide you with a modem. This might connect to the phone system or to the cable TV system. There will be a monthly charge and possibly a monthly download limit.

A wireless router then plugs into the modem and enables you to share the one ISP connection with all computers, etc, in the house. Some ISPs provide a combined modem/router in one box.

There's not normally a charge for using a router, and most ISPs expect you to use one. However, multiple users can take you faster to your download limit.

No. A router has got to be hooked to a modem that
has internet before you can get a Wi-Fi signal.

If you already have internet access, all you need is Wi-Fi router which is device you buy (pay once to purchase). This is same as if you have access to cable TV service, and you just go out and buy another TV.

if you do not have internet access, you need to choose ISP and this service is something you pay for (normally on a monthly basis). This is same as getting arrangement to bring cable TV service to your residence.

No. You pay for monthly internet service. IF you choose to LEASE a wireless modem or router, there WILL be a monthly service charge. Buy your own wireless router and you can avoid the charge. You CAN also buy your own modem and save paying a monthly service charge. Keep in mind though, you need to decide whether your service will be cable or DSL before you buy a modem.
Edit: Alas.Computer tech has made a fool of himself again. YES you CAN use a wireless router to communicate with your other wireless devices. You just won't have internet. That's exactly why it's called a wireless LAN.

Obviously you have to pay a internet provider, a router by itself is just a router with no internet.

You need more than just a router. You still need some form of broadband internet access which with a modem will be able to connect to your router in order for your phone to switch to Wi-Fi and still have access to the internet.

And broadband internet access still costs money to use every month.

  • What will my monthly verizon wireless bill be? With the iphone 5c if i chose unlimited + 2gb share everything plan it says $60 per month and $40 for the line. Does that mean my bill will be $100 a month or are there other factors in the bill?
  • My iPhone 6 with iOS 9 has stopped sniffing Wi-Fi routers? I'm typing this Q on my computer, on a close-by Wi-Fi connection. But my phone can't see it. What's up?
  • Is turning off my routers firewall bad? I've had this problem where my Internet would constantly shut off but ever since I turned off the firewall on my router the Internet never goes off. Would it be dangerous just to keep my routers firewall off? Both my computers have there own anti virus and firewall and the only other devices I have are my iPhone, iPad, and Xbox 360
  • Is there anyway I can access other people on my routers internet history? I was trying to see what sites people on my router have been on and I was just wondering if it was possible and if it goes away when they delete internet history. We have 9 things connected (laptops, iPods, iPhone's, etc) so can I look separately for each device or is it all in one.
