Does a 3.5mm extender reduce quality?

So here's the issue. I have an Audio Technica M50 and recently I just got the iPhone 5s. The problem is the case I got for it has a small audio jack opening so the huge ones on the ATH M50's won't fit. So I'm thinking of getting a really short extender so it'll fit. Problem is I'm obsessed with sound quality so would this reduce sound quality? Would the sound coming out of my headphones be as good as if there wasn't an extender?

Why don't you enlarge the opening? Does an extension cable lose quality? No, and if so nothing that you can hear. An audiophile snob would say otherwise, but they can't prove it or willing to do blind tests!

In theory, the more cable and more connections there are, then there will be a reduction to the sound quality. However, realistically, an adapter will make no difference.

I don't own either M50s or an iPhone, so I don't know the technical specs. But you might be better with a portable headphone amp, rather than a cable. I mean, if you're happy with the sound now, go cable, but if you want a bit more oomph then an amp might be better.

  • Why does my Wi-Fi extender keep disconnecting my internet? I recently bought a TP-LINK TL-WA850RE 300Mbps Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender to extend my Wi-Fi to the Wi-Fi "dead zones" of my house for better connection. All was working well until all my computers kept saying "unidentified network no internet access", and my xbox wouldn't connect either, but my iphone and ipad connect to the internet fine. The problem ends when i unplug my extender, but i don't know why the extender isn't working.
  • Why does my iPhone receive good quality videos as bad quality videos? So I recently met a famous guy in concert and when I got a picture wth him I was getting a video and my friend used her phone to video it. So she sent it to me and it was like terrible quality and the video was like little with a huge black border around it. But yet it looks perfectly fine on her phone? How do I fix it? Whenever I try to get video editing apps it always says error & only with that particular video. I have an iPhone 5c, and so does my friend.
  • What's the best MFi certified Iphone 5 battery extender case? I'm looking for the best durable and best battery extender with an mfi certification. This is kind of strange but what's the point of MFi certification? LIke Maxboost doesn't have it. Does it matter? What is the best battery extender case you have found that incorporates everything like syncing, and reception?
  • Just got Spotify Premium. Switched the music quality to extreme, and the quality isn't good? There must be something that I have to do because the quality sounds the same, even though I switched it to extreme. I made sure that I wasn't imagining it - I played my iTunes copy and it sounded so much better. This is the iPhone app, if that matters. What's the solution?
