Ever used GIMP image editing software?

I'm working on create an app for the iPhone right now but i need to create a few images first. I'd need to save them in.PNG format in order to drag those images into Xcode 5.1.1. I've been hearing that recently since GIMP 2.8, the software has become worse with upgrades? Doesn't save.PNG format anymore? How about bugs, spam, spyware with GIMP? Is it safe to use? I mean it is free instead of paying $500 for Adobe's photoshop so there must be a catch. What is it?

It depends what you want it for, is it just image editing? Gimp will save an 8bit file at max, which isn't great. Gimp is very safe to use, it's just not proffesional.

I THINK "rawtherape" will let you save a 16bit png (or tiff at least, still accepted by photoshop). However, rawtherape isn't the most straight forward image editing program because its made to edit RAW files.

You can always download a free trial of photoshop. Or get photoshop elements for about 80 quid.

If you are making vector work, download "inkscape", or a free trial of illustrator.

Adobe Fireworks makes internet "GIF"s, try that for a free trial if you need that.

PS: To be put bluntly "BIT" is the gradient of colour, 8 bit is like lego blocks, where 32 bit is more fine.
