Family financial issues-as a teen?

My family is having financial difficulties since my mother lost her job/unemployment a year ago. She's the type to procrastinate severely and has been "looking" for a job since January. My parents are separated and my father is supporting both her bills and his on his income and savings. This really nags me and I need to help in some way, whether my parents accept that we have financial problems or not. My father is getting close to losing the house.

I'm a junior in high school and I'm looking into a part time job. I've got after school marching and tutoring and taking AP courses, so I want to know how flexible a job can get and if the income would be worth it? Can anyone give me their experience with holding a job and high school?
I also want to live as little as a financial burden as possible for the family. For example, it's an incredibly smart idea to get rid of our iPhone family plan, but with my father's adoration of electronics, he would sell the car if it meant he could jeep his phone. Maybe I can just get rid of my phone from the family plan. Is there anything like that that I can do to make sure that I'm leeching as little as possible from the income? If you've gone through financial troubles in the family, please share! I want to know everything.

It is admirable that you want to share in the financial responsibility of your family. However, it sounds like your parents need some financial lessons to get their priorities in order. Your correct. You don't need I phones, transportation is much more important. Keep in mind that you are probably in a contract with the phones and breaking it could be costly but it is worth investigating. As for working and going to high school. It is going to be difficult, especially taking AP classes. Marching band is I'm sure very demanding. Practice every night? Week end games or competition? You will probably have to give up one of those activities to be able to work. What will be more beneficial to you in a resume? What is your goal for college and a job? It is going to be musical? Teaching (tutoring would look good on a resume for college). What AP classes are you taking? Are they accepted where you want to attend college? Are they related to your anticipated major? You are also correct in questioning if it is cost effective. What will you spend in gas or transportation to get to your job? Will you make enough to make a difference with your family. Even if you earn your own spending money, it would be a help.
