How common is Wi-Fi in Southeast Asia and how fast is it?

So i'm going backpacking southeast asia (Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam) for about 8 months. The only electronics ill bring is a unlocked iphone 5. Ill be using it for emails, skype, facebook, online banking, PHOTOS, and uploading the photos online. I've heard that Wi-Fi is quite frequent in sea but ill be staying at very cheap hostels and such. Would they have Wi-Fi or is it only for the upscale hotels? And how fast is the Wi-Fi? My main concern is if ill be able to upload and backup say about 40 photos, and a couple of videos at a single use. Ill be uploading via flickr, facebook, and dropbox. Will i be able to do this quickly with southeast asian Wi-Fi? The photos will be taken off the iphone so the won't be to0 big, probably between 0.5 - 1.5 mb

I do not have great experience with Southeast Asia personally but speaking to a friend of mine she explained that on her travels hostels provide communal Wi-Fi spots. A place I have heard about that has great reviews for home comforts like Wi-Fi is the Sihome Backpackers Lodge in Vientiane, Laos. I'm afraid that's as far as my knowledge goes for this.

Some places great; some places nonexistent. Why not relax and ENJOY your travels instead of WORKING at all that Internet stuff.

I see people take tons of holiday photos, may never even look at them when home… Or forcing family to look. REAL life does not come through a lens.

You'll do better looking for internet cafes than expecting to have it in your hotel.

Out of all the countries you mentioned probably Thailand has the fastest internet connection. Wi-Fi is widely available through out SE Asia and its cheap to get a SIM card with a data plan to use 3G networks.

uploading pics and videos is really easy and fast everywhere; even in Laos and Cambodia. Most hostiles do have Wi-Fi and hotspots.

  • Where are common places to leave an iPhone? I lost my iPhone a few days ago and have been searching my house nonstop. I'm certain it is in my house.
  • Using an AT&T iPhone 5 in Asia? Going to Korea and Vietnam soon, was wondering if I could purchase a preloaded nano sim card locally and use it there? It is under an AT&T contract, so it is locked in the US, but will it work outside of the US? Also, can my iphone connect to the LTE signals in Korea if I get a sim card there?
  • Straight talk in Southeast Kansas? I currently have an AT&T iPhone 4s. I'm wanting too switch too straight talk. Now I understand that that the "unlimited data" is not unlimited. I'm not worried about that because I have internet at home. I'm wanting too know how the signal is in the S. E.K. More so specifically, around the Humboldt, Chanute area. Any info is appreciated and welcomed!
  • Is it common to bring dslr cameras to study abroad? I'm going abroad in the fall for a semester and I was wondering it if was worth buying a dslr camera. I own an iphone 5 and a point-and-shoot camera that works okay but the sometimes takes blurry photos. Is it worth buying a $400 dslr camera? Is it common for students to bring dslr cameras while studying abroad or is it too clunky? btw I'm in college
