How to buy an unlocked iPhone 5 in the US?

I'll be visiting the US In a bit and I need to buy an unlocked iPhone 5 while I'm there.
Whether its Tmobile, Verizon, or even the Apple store… Can I buy an unlocked iPhone 5? For use on my asian phone carrier

i heard if i go to verizon, the iPhone is already unlocked out of the box… Does that mean i simple go there and buy one full price, or do I have to go there and get a plan then pay an early termination fee?

ps. I'm only in the US For around 3 weeks doing this, what are my viable options?

You could only buy an unlocked iPhone 5 (or any iPhone for that matter) through an Apple Store whether it be online or in the Store.
For the record T-Mobile in the US does not sell the iPhone. Never have.
Verizon does, but they are a CDMA carrier which likely would not work with your home carrier, but since it is a factory unlocked model as well which features a GSM network SIM card tray it may work. The off contract price may be $599 or $649.

Apple themselves are expected to launch their own factory unlocked iPhone 5 though it is expected in November.

The major challenge you would face though is likely the shortage due to the high demand.

Bets place to buy any type of phone is most often than not Amazon and unlocking it is easy, you just call at&t or whoever the phones supposed to be for and they'll unlock it for $10-$15. You should really check out the new Unlimited everything (including hotspot) plan that just came out. Runs off T-Mobile and at&t's 4G network for $49/mo and ends up bein free or making you money every month instead. It just launched in September and is taking the money that would other wise be wasted on the same old repetitive advertising and giving it to the people for sharing with others. $20 for every 3 people you enroll every month for as long as they have the service+another $20 for every 3 people they add as well… It adds up let me tell ya. Also coming to Europe next year

First of all find out whether your Asian carrier is GSM or not. If it is, you can use an unlocked iPhone 5 either purchased from Apple without contract or service (see more below), or you can buy an AT&T iPhone 5 and then get it unlocked (also see more below).

But if your Asian carrier is not GSM, then I don't think ANY iPhone available in the USA will work on your carrier…

Anyway…

The Apple store will be selling unlocked iPhone 5 very soon, but if you go to their site right now and look, you'll only see the iPhone 4S listed that way. I really don't know when the iPhone 5 unlocked will be available there unfortunately.

So your best option, if it's available when you're in the USA, is to simply buy an unlocked iPhone 5 (without any service or contract) from Apple directly.

I have not heard what you did about Verizon. From what I know, for All USA carriers, their phones are NOT sold initially unlocked, but you can ask the carrier to unlock the phone after you get it (although usually they don't allow you to unlock immediately; you have to wait a few months*).

Regarding early termination etc., although carriers don't advertise new phones at full retail price, that doesn't mean you can't buy them that way. And if you DO buy them that way, they don't come with any contract at all (although you still may be required to sign up for service, but I imagine you could cancel that at any time without a penalty).

So your next-best option would be to buy an iPhone 5 at full price from AT&T, without service or contract, and have them unlock it immediately.

(I recommend AT&T because so far it's the only GSM carrier in the USA that has iPhone - since GSM is the standard in

*My guess is that if you buy a phone at full price (instead of the discounted price-with-new-contract), there will be no imposed delay if you want to unlock the phone.
