How to get iPhone out of recovery mode? - 2

I plugged my iPhone 4s into my laptop, and started updating it. I didn't touch either the computer or my phone while it was doing so, all seemed fine, until it finished updating and an error came up saying that it couldn't update. Now my phone screen just displays a plug pointed at the iTunes logo and iTunes says it is in recovery mode.

My phone isn't jailbroken and I want to keep it that way. I use a mac and really don't want to lose all of my data! My graduation and humanitarian trip pictures are on there…

Basically, is there any way to restore my phone without losing my data? Can I back it up some way, would taking it in to the Apple store help, or is there a program I can download? I might mention I don't know a lot about technology but I do know a bit…
