How to get my iphone 5 earbuds to work?

I bought the new iphone 5 and I'm trying to use the headphones today and i'm only picking up the background sound not the actually speaking content. The only time i can hear the dialouge is when i hold down the middle of the volume button on the actual headphones. Other than that it is static or background noise.

You may have broken headphones or iphone (yikes!) Call the store you got it from and an apple store if there's ome close by and ask them they may be able to help if you have your receipt for the store you bought it from

If you are hearing the background sound, that means you did not plug in your headphones in the jack all the way in. The reason why it makes that background sound because it is plugged only halfway in the jack. Try pushing it in further in. If it still does not work, go to the apple store and they will replace it for free.

  • My earbuds will not work on my laptop? I have a HP Compaq nc6400. The earbuds are new and came with an iPhone 5. They have worked until today. They are in the right hole, the volume for everything is on. I have tried restarting my laptop. The sound works when the earbuds are out, but not in. Please help? I looked at the sound settings before; everything looked like it normally does and nothing was muted. I didn't have anything else, but I tried another pair of earbuds and the problem persisted.
