How to make my eye makeup stand out more in pictures?

Whenever I do a smoky eye or something fancy with my eye shadow it always looks better when I look in the mirror. Very clear and bright. But when I try and take a picture of it, my eye shadow is barely noticeable. Why is this? I use my iPhone 5 to take pictures mostly. But I've tried using my camera, which has better picture quality and same thing happens. Just looks a mess on my eyes or you can barely see I'm wearing eye shadow. I've tried making my makeup darker, but it doesn't help in the slightest. I'm not a professional makeup artist, but I do like playing around with makeup and creating new looks. Pictures will help me to go back to them in the future. How can I make my eye makeup more noticeable in pictures? If you suggest to buy a good camera, please can you name 1 or 2 that would be suitable. Thank you so much for the help!

Added (1). I already use the Urban Decay Primer. I have used MAC eyeshadows but I recently bought BH Cosmetics 3rd edition eyeshadow palette. I'm in love with the colours! Plus they're very vibrant looking. Like I said, they stand out amazingly when looking in the mirror! But whenever I try and take a picture, the results are shockingly bad.

A good way to make your eye shadow stand out is to first start with a good eye shadow primer. I personally like Urban Decay's primers, there are knock-offs, but they're not as good. The primer will help your shadow stay in place and it will make it look more intense. Urban Decay primers make the shadows look more pigmented, which helps brighten up your eyes.

I'm curious what products you're using? I take photos ffor instagram (@yaxofossiad. All the time with my Galaxy S3 and they are beautiful. My only suggeation is to take them further away and crop them, if the flash is too bright it'll wash You out. Or try some natural light.

Try more vibrant colors, not darker colors. I'm not sure but maybe if you try neon ( neon is a very bright red ) it'll look good

By the way nice avatar!
