How to retrieve notes from an old iphone?

I just recently got an iphone 6s and the notes on my old phone didn't transfer over. Is there anything I can do to get my notes back or are they gone forever? Please help I had important files on there and now I'm worried that I can never get them back. (We wiped my old phone and turned it in for money, but it was backed up previously)

I thought that this meant the copy of the old notes was forever on the email no matter what changes you make to it.recently i deleted all my notes to make room for my phone but i realized that by doing that, it deleted the old copy of the notes off my email as well. Is there any way to get them back considering they used to be on my email before?
