How to take photograph of the Moon with an iPhone?

I tried to take photos of the Moon with my iPhone, the result is a bright white disk.
Any tips on making surface feature visible? Maybe with the edit?

You need a digital camera with a heavy duty zoom lense to get any decent pictures - a cell phone camera won't work

Take the picture just BEFORE dark and the moon should come out OK.

Try leaning the phone on something immovable then swing exposure compensation to the minus side.

You can't.

You need to almost fill the frame, spot meter on the moon and manually set your exposure.

A camera phone meters over too much of a dark scene in which the moon will be a small part. It then increases the exposure time because it thinks there's not enough light. The result is a blurred, over exposed blob.

I don't know if you can get a fast enough shutter speed on the iPhone and I doubt you could get a proper zoom to keep it from exposing for anything else. Your best bet would be to use a camera on manual and learn how proper exposure works (it takes some studying, don't be fooled that your machine can do all the thinking for you). I would never consider using a phone for astrophotography (or anything other than basic snaps for memories).

If correct you tap on screen to adjust light exposure, you need to tap on moon to lower values, that lowers brightness, if you tap on dark sky it enhances light value and over exposes white areas as such as the moon itself, you may want to try both and upload to computer to adjust advanced light and exposure values,

Functions may differ on iPhone models and Apps used.

.

If you have IOS 8 you can get apps that allow manual exposure control. Try something like ISO 32 and a shutter speed of 1/1000. With normal automatic exposure, the moon is going to be way overexposed.

Use digital camera.

Just sit on a rocket and go for the moon when you got out from earth then simple take a snap of the moon by your i phone, this is easiest way but expensive

With any camera in a phone it is not possible to get a good photo of the Moon filling the frame and showing details. Phone cameras are simply not intended for that sort of photography.

  • Sun and Moon not in the right place on sky guide app for iphone? I have checked the time on my settings and that is correct, but during the day the sun is shown on the other side of the world, and the moon is up and vice versa. Any ideas what's going on? Not life or death, just curious.
