How well would an iPhone work in an area with poor cell connection but good Wi-Fi?

The web browsing would be fast but the call quality would suck

You could text or use the internet but phone calls would be poor.

Sorry if this seems to be a stupid question, but I'm just starting to look into upgrading out of a dumbphone to a smartphone. My university (where I'm most of the year) is in the middle of Wisconsin, in a place known for getting poor cell phone service. The Wi-Fi there's reliable, though. I'm not exactly sure whether an iPhone uses cell service or Wi-Fi for texts/calls, so can somebody let me know? Also let me know how well this would work for which version (3, 4, 5, etc.)

Any social contact (Messaging or calling from the provider) wouldn't be very good, but anything Internet related like Browser, Facebook, etc would work fine. Unless you mean a free texting+calling app

  • Would you say I'm poor, middle or upper classed? My parents have a combined income of around 120, 000 pounds. I live in a 430, 000 pounds house. I have a IPhone 5 a nice house lots of nice things 3 cars. But yet the people at Queen elizabeths Grammar school are calling me poor with their new Iphone 5s's and their billions of designer clothes and laptops. I understand that I have my parents to thank for all of this, as do the rest. But why do the people of that school taunt me so?
  • Would metro PCS and iPhone work well? I'm buying an iPhone 4S and I'm apparently (my parents) wanna switch to metro PCS, in fact they ARE GOING to switch by the end of the year. I've heard that metro doesn't have a very good service, but a couple of other people have told me that it depends on the phone I have, so… Would the service of metro work well with the iPhone? (By service I mean if I would get signal pretty much everywhere and browse fast to the Internet)
  • Why through t-mobile am i able to get the iphone 5 in my area but not the 4S? I go to the website and every time i type in my zip for the 4s it says its not available in my area. But the 5 just goes straight through to the purchasing process. Are they trying to force people to buy the 5 or is there solid reasoning behind it? Because i'm honestly considering switching providers over this bs.
  • Why is my Wi-Fi connection good on laptop but not on iPhone? I have virgin Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi on my laptop is fast and responsive, but on my iPhone it is slow and often disconnects and I have to walk around with it everywhere until it finds my Wi-Fi again Why is it doing this? What can I do to make the Wi-Fi on my iPhone faster/stop disconnecting? I have an iPhone 4s
