Have you tried apple.com support communities. For what it's worth, I can never get airdrop to work reliably either.

You can't use AirDrop. It requires OS X version 10.10 or later and MacBook Air Late 2010 or later.
- Why can't AirDrop on new iPhones work with AirDrop on new macs? IOS7 lets you AirDrop files between phones, and Mac OS 10.8 has had an AirDrop feature for the last year or so, but why can't I transfer a file from my phone to my laptop and vice versa easily?
