Well it depends on a few things. Do you have an upgrade available? If so I would just go ahead and get the 6 or a new phone from your carrier. Before you just get the iPhone 6 I strongly recommend looking at all the phones in the store and seeing which one you like best. Play with the basic apps on the phone like the dialer, text messages, calendar, ect… If you don't have an upgrade and your still stuck in a contract its best to either buy a used phone from ebay, or choose a lower cost phone from your carrier at full price. There are some great options out there right now such as the Moto G, HTC Desire 816, and the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL. These will all cost much less than what an iPhone 5S or 6 will cost. Just make sure the phone will work with your carrier before buying.
As far as getting the 6 it is if you have the inclination & if it is financially attainable. If not, the 5s.

- I broke my iphone 5 glass, can I just buy new glass cover for it? My girl recently dropped her iPhone 5 and the glass is cracked on the front. The touchscreen still works great, but the cracked glass is obviously very annoying and will undoubtedly get worse with time. Can I just replace it with a generic outer glass or do I also have to replace the digitizer touch function when I replace the glass on it?
