Yes you can i have the iphone4 and i updated mine as well. All you have to do is go to settings > general> update, or you can plug your phone to the computer and connect to itunes and click on this iphone, then it will say update and you update it
p.s. I would connect mine to itunes because it only takes like 10 mins, and if you update it over Wi-Fi it takes like 40 mins

So I went to a friends phone retail store he unlocked my iPhone through a company wich gives u the code to unlock and then he connected it wit Net10 (AT&T).
